Yolk was opened in 2002 and Maria took it over in 2006, and sold the business in 2014. In that time she increased sales exponentially (over 600% in 8 years), and also kept her small independent business very much on the “pulse” thanks to active social media, a website, blog, monthly email, and managing all branding and marketing. Maria has been called a “tastemaker” and “one of the few boutique owners who figured it out”. “The bottom line is that I’m very astute at knowing what people want, who my customer is and how to make that exciting,” she says.
Known for traveling internationally to source hard-to-find products, Maria also worked with independent crafts people and vendors to create exclusives for Yolk so the selection always stayed special and unique. As well as a beyond-loyal local following, Yolk became a go-to for commercial and movie stylists looking for unique home goods, was prominently featured in the comedy “I love you man” and also gathered up quite a nice celebrity clientele (if you’re into that sort of thing).
Here’s just a smattering of the press that Maria and Yolk received.
